Publicist and sociologist Igor Eidman arrested in absentia

Igor Eidman has been charged under articles on military “fakes,” evading the duties of a “foreign agent,” and participation in a terrorist organization. Eidman told OVD-Info this.

🟧 The Investigative Committee accuses the publicist of participating in a terrorist organization because of a repost of a fundraiser for drones for the Freedom of Russia Legion, as well as because of an interview with the Ukrainian channel “Now” in March 2024, in which he spoke about the need to support Ukrainian Armed Forces units joined by Russians.

🟧 In connection with this, Eidman is accused of participating in three organizations at once: the Freedom of Russia Legion, the Russian Volunteer Corps, and the Siberian Battalion.

🟧 The article on military “fakes” was brought against him because he mentioned crimes committed by Russian military personnel in Bucha in one of his posts, while the “foreign agent” charge stems from the lack of labeling on his posts and failure to submit reports to the Justice Ministry.

🟧 Eidman has also been on the wanted list since last fall in a case on a terrorist community opened over the activities of the Free Russia Forum.

The publicist left Russia in 2011. In 2021, the Prosecutor General’s Office declared the Forum of Russian-speaking Europeans, headed by Eidman, an “undesirable” organization. Two years later, the publicist himself was added to the register of “foreign agents.”

He also heads the German-Russian Human Rights Dialogue society, which operates with the support of Germany’s Foreign Ministry.
