Mediascope: Max messenger overtook Telegram for the first time in monthly audience in Russia
The monthly audience of the Max messenger in Russia exceeded Telegram’s audience for the first time in May and June, according to data from Mediascope noted by “Verstka.”
In May, Max’s audience amounted to 86 million people, almost 5.2 million more than Telegram, which was used by 80.9 million people. A month earlier, in April, Pavel Durov’s messenger had been ahead of Max by more than 2.5 million users.
According to Mediascope, the state messenger managed to overtake Telegram, which is blocked in Russia, including because of a decline in its competitor’s audience. While in May Max was used by 706,000 more people than in April, Telegram had 6 million fewer users.
In June, this trend continued. According to Mediascope, Max’s audience grew to 86.3 million people, adding almost 200,000 users, while Telegram’s fell to 75.7, losing nearly another 5.2 million people.
Thus, even after Max was removed from the App Store at the beginning of June, the messenger’s monthly reach increased. However, the growth in these figures slowed sharply: if in May Max’s audience grew by 0.83%, then in June by only 0.23%.
In its calculations, Mediascope counts users who visited a resource’s pages or opened its apps on mobile devices and computers at least once during the period.
🟪Max’s audience is growing because the messenger is being forcibly installed in schools, universities, and other state institutions. For example, in schools teachers refuse to send parents information about their child and homework through other services, and in some universities QR codes for entering the building are generated through Max.
