Ukrainian servicemen are being rewarded for capturing Russians alive

While the Russian military leadership gives orders to execute Ukrainian prisoners of war, in Ukraine its own servicemen are encouraged for taking Russian soldiers prisoner.

Yesterday, at the Coordination Headquarters, servicemen of the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade were honored after saving the life of a wounded Russian serviceman, Belarusian citizen Yury Malshchitsky. To evacuate the captive to a safe place, the Ukrainian servicemen had to carry him on their shoulders for ten kilometers (!) through mined terrain under constant Russian shelling.

Of course, this is a sign of the humanity of Ukrainian servicemen. But first and foremost, it is pragmatic calculation: every living Russian prisoner of war is a chance to bring back a Ukrainian held in Russian captivity through an exchange.

Russian military propaganda deliberately pushes its soldiers not to surrender by killing themselves. Soldiers are given instructions on how to take their own lives, political officers frighten them with fake stories about the "horrors of Ukrainian captivity," and propagandists in Moscow studios talk about the “honor” of suicide.

Ukraine follows a completely different approach. From the very beginning of the full-scale invasion, we have openly addressed Russian servicemen and offered them a chance to stay alive and return home as part of an exchange.

For Ukraine, prisoners of war are a valuable resource, since exchanging them makes it possible to free Ukrainians from Russian captivity. That is why in Ukraine servicemen are rewarded and paid cash bonuses for capturing Russian soldiers alive.
