A Block on Negativity. The topic of refugees has become taboo in the Kursk Region, the area hit hardest by the war

Nikolai Skrynnik, a refugee from Sudzha, ran for the Kursk Regional Duma with one goal: to force the authorities to hear border-area residents harmed by the war. But two weeks before the vote, the LDPR, which had nominated him, forced the candidate to withdraw. The party leadership was unhappy with criticism of Kursk Governor Alexander Khinshtein and United Russia: Skrynnik openly stated that the current authorities had turned away from the problems of the border areas.

Skrynnik’s withdrawal became the culmination of an almost two-year campaign to push the subject of Kursk refugees out of the public sphere.
