Sanctions will be lifted from Russian businessmen Usmanov and Fridman — Reuters

The outlet, citing EU diplomats, writes that on Tuesday the ambassadors of European Union countries did ultimately agree to remove the two billionaires from the sanctions list, and also to extend restrictions against the remaining three thousand individuals and legal entities for three years.

Earlier, EU ambassadors had provisionally agreed to lift sanctions from Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman, but Latvia opposed the decision. Approval of sanctions requires a unanimous decision by all EU countries.

🔵The European Union imposed sanctions against both businessmen in 2022. On September 14, EU countries extended sanctions against Russia for one week: Europe needed that time to decide on removing Alisher Usmanov from the sanctions list, as France and Slovakia had requested, and Mikhail Fridman. Slovakia had requested the removal of the latter.

🔵As a compromise, Ireland proposed leaving Usmanov on the list while lifting some restrictions, for example unfreezing his assets and lifting the ban on entering the European Union. Some countries said this would create a dangerous legal precedent.
