Threats with a bottle, war, a 23,586-km escape, and encounters with bears. Novaya Europe tells the stories of deserters Artyom and Semyon
Artyom and Semyon were born on Sakhalin, ten thousand kilometers from the front line. They were forcibly taken to the front, and the men met in a military prison so they could escape from there together.
Artyom was forced to sign a contract through threats and humiliation, while Semyon was detained on the first day of mobilization in the entryway of his apartment building and forcibly taken to the draft office.
Today both live in Finland. To save themselves, they had to cover more than 20,000 kilometers and cross all of Russia twice, a journey nearly half the circumference of the globe.
