Social studies textbooks edited by Dmitry Medvedev have become mandatory for all schools in Russia. So what exactly is wrong with them?

To begin with, besides Medvedev, the content was supervised by Medinsky. So what came out was not a textbook in the classical sense, but propaganda woven into the school curriculum.

Here are just some of the points:

▶️Putin’s name is mentioned in the textbook 3 times more often than Peter I’s, and 5 times more often than in the previous textbook.

▶️Immanuel Kant is described as a “German and Russian philosopher.”

▶️The medieval Domostroy is presented as an example of family order.

▶️The term “totalitarianism” is framed as a tool of the “West’s information war against the USSR.”

▶️They even inserted an ad for signing a contract with the Defense Ministry into the textbook — promising benefits and the possibility of signing a contract without prior conscript service.

And this is what part of the textbook’s list of authors looks like, aside from Medvedev and Medinsky:

▶️E.S. Kholmogorov: Russian nationalist, publicist, author of the term “Russian Spring.”

▶️S.R. Moiseyev: Chairman of the NGO “Triune Rus” — an organization promoting the idea of a “single Rus” (Russia-Ukraine-Belarus).

▶️V.A. Nikonov: State Duma deputy (“United Russia”), chairman of the board of the “Russian World” foundation — an instrument of Russian “soft power” abroad, grandson of Vyacheslav Molotov.

▶️V.A. Kononov (executive secretary): Executive secretary of the state history textbook line edited by Medinsky.

▶️Yu.A. Nikiforov: Member of the academic council of the Russian Military Historical Society (RMHS), one of the authors of the unified history textbook edited by Medinsky.

▶️E.V. Saplina: Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, head of the Department of Methods of Teaching History, the only author with a профильное pedagogical education — but a degree in library science, not in social studies.

▶️E.V. Brodovskaya: Candidate of Historical Sciences, associate professor, history lecturer.
