Energoatom says spent nuclear fuel storage facility in Chornobyl was struck

The radiation situation at the facility is normal, and there was no fuel there, the Ukrainian state enterprise clarified.

It is reported that overnight, as a result of a Russian drone hitting the site of the Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility (CSFSF), the container reception building was partially destroyed. A fire broke out at the scene, and there were no casualties. Energoatom уточняет, что в здании не хранилось ядерное топливо.

Zelensky, for his part, said that the military “deliberately struck this specific nuclear infrastructure facility. At the moment, there is no excess above radiation background norms. But there is definitely an excess, even beyond Russia’s long-extreme level of arrogance.”

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expressed deep concern, since the strike occurred at a site where a large amount of nuclear material is located, stored just a few meters from the building that was attacked.

The IAEA team currently at the Chornobyl site will soon visit the facility to assess the consequences of the strike. The Russian side has not yet commented on the incident.
