Schools want to include “readiness to defend state sovereignty” in the “personal outcomes” of studying geography and chemistry

The learning outcomes for students in grades 10-11 in a number of subjects may have “readiness to defend state sovereignty” added to them; Verstka drew attention to the corresponding draft amendments by the Education Ministry to the secondary general education program.

Determination to defend sovereignty and building the future with “the priority of the spiritual over the material” are planned to be included in the “personal outcomes” of studying Russian language, literature, chemistry, and geography.

In addition, “readiness to counter manifestations of corruption in everyday life” and a responsible attitude toward “creating a strong family based on marriage” (instead of creating a family based on “the values of family life”) are intended to be fixed in the learning outcomes for literature and geography. The norm about a strong family is also intended to be included in the outcomes of Russian language and biology classes.

New geopolitical terms should also appear in geography teaching. For example, North Korea, Mongolia, and China are to become “a new core in the formation of a multipolar world,” while Africa is to be “Russia’s strategic partner.”

High school students will also be told about the reorientation of Russia’s economic ties toward the east and south, and the strengthening of interaction with countries in Asia and the Middle East. The topic “Russia’s National Security” will be included in the lesson on humanity’s global problems.

If the draft order is adopted in its current version, it will enter into force from the next academic year, on September 1, 2027.
