One in every ten Russian prisoners of war in Ukraine is not a citizen of the Russian Federation. As of September 2026, among the POWs from the Russian Armed Forces are foreigners from 55 countries around the world.

While Russian propaganda stupefies its own population with stories about “NATO mercenaries” and “Polish speech” on radios, Russia itself is recruiting mercenaries from all over the world.

We know the names of almost 29,000 foreigners who have signed contracts with the Russian Armed Forces since 2022. For 2026 alone, the Russian Defense Ministry planned to recruit another 18,500 foreigners.

And Moscow is primarily hunting for the poorest people, those who are easier to lure with promises of big payouts and a better life. In reality, they are sent into assaults and used in the most dangerous sectors.

After diplomatic pressure, scandals, and resistance from the governments of other countries, Russia suspended recruitment in 39 states. Among them are China, India, Egypt, Kenya, Pakistan, Ghana, and several other countries in Africa and Asia.

But Moscow has simply switched to other directions and is ramping up recruitment in South America, Central Asia, and Africa. This is already visible not only from our data, but also from the number and geography of foreign prisoners of war.

In the first 9 months of 2026, more foreigners were taken prisoner by Ukraine than in all of 2025.

Among them are citizens of Argentina, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Honduras, Vietnam, Mongolia, and many other distant countries.

Russia tells its citizens fairy tales that the whole world is fighting against them.

Meanwhile, it is scraping up people from all over the world to send them to die for Putin’s desire to bomb Ukrainian cities.
