Latvia is replacing polling station workers over their trips to Russia and Belarus

Latvia’s State Security Service told LSM that 6,000 polling station workers had been checked across Latvia.

“Among the risk factors identified were people’s trips to the aggressor state Russia and its ally Belarus after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as the spread of pro-Kremlin narratives,” the State Security Service said.

According to the outlet, 20 people had to be urgently replaced in Daugavpils. It is also known that the composition of the commission in Krāslava was changed.

Latvia’s Central Election Commission said that checks of polling station workers by the State Security Service are standard practice. The head of the Central Election Commission, Māris Zviedris, did not say how many people had to be replaced after the checks, specifying only that orders had been sent to several municipalities.

Parliamentary elections in Latvia will be held on October 3.
