Historian Yury Dmitriev was hospitalized from a penal colony with a suspected stroke

The 70-year-old historian Yury Dmitriev was urgently transferred from colony No. 18 in Mordovia to a medical correctional facility in the village of Barashevo with a suspected stroke. This was reported by the human rights group ZPCh.

A source for the human rights defenders said Dmitriev needs to be transferred to a city hospital.

“There are doubts that this prison medical facility has the diagnostic and treatment equipment needed to carry out the necessary procedures. Yury Alekseyevich needs to be transferred to a city hospital. His lawyer must also be urgently allowed to see him. On September 26, Saturday, the lawyer will try to get in to see Yury Dmitriev, but is almost certain he will not be allowed in on the weekend,” the human rights defenders’ interlocutor said.

Yury Dmitriev is a historian and the former head of the Karelian branch of Memorial. In December 2021, a court in Petrozavodsk sentenced him to 15 years in prison on charges of violent sexual acts against his adopted daughter, lewd acts toward her, producing pornography, and possessing a weapon.
