Fighters on the home front. How activists are combating violence against women in modern Russia

In 2022–2024, at least 3,000 women were killed by domestic violence in Russia, according to human rights advocates’ calculations and data that Russia submits to the UN. These figures are likely far from complete. The war in Ukraine will lead to an even greater rise in violence: men returning from the front are becoming a threat to their wives and partners.

The Russian state has partially decriminalized domestic violence, and law enforcement agencies are reluctant to open cases based on such complaints. At the same time, human rights and feminist organizations fighting the problem are facing repression.

But even in these difficult conditions, they continue to shelter women in crisis in safe houses and seek court punishment for their tormentors.
