Some major Russian platforms have stopped blocking users with VPN enabled

Some websites and apps of services that stopped working with VPN enabled after April 15 have once again become accessible with it for some Russian users, «Verstka» noted.

Russians said on social media that they were able to access the Ozon and Wildberries marketplaces with a working VPN, although the services had previously prohibited this.

“They started letting me in. I even checked in case I had tunneling enabled. But I haven’t bought anything else yet,” one user writes.

At the same time, another group of users reported that for them the marketplaces remain accessible only without using a VPN. Wildberries support also said that the platform can function correctly only without it.

Nevertheless, «Verstka» confirmed that the marketplaces, as well as some other platforms, do indeed open from within Russia both on websites and in apps even when using a VPN. We tested three popular circumvention services with split tunneling technology turned off.

In particular, «Verstka» was able to access Ozon and Wildberries with VPN enabled without restrictions, as well as some Yandex services, for example Yandex Pay, Yandex Books, and Yandex Maps. Yandex Food, however, still remains unavailable.

The websites of some stores that also initially did not work with VPN have started opening with it for some users. Thus, «Verstka» was able to access VkusVill. Perekrestok, Pyaterochka, and 2GIS maps only when using certain VPNs.

🩵Since April 15, Russia’s largest online resources have been required to restrict Russians’ access via VPN. The Ministry of Digital Development said this is necessary for “data security.”
