As the Sevastopol Defense Museum told, the canvas of Franz Roubaud’s original panorama was almost destroyed in 1942. Some fragments survived, and after restoration they were returned to Sevastopol.

The panorama that has since been displayed in the museum is a work painted by Soviet artists using the surviving original parts.

In total, 39 such fragments are kept in the museum. But at the time of the fire, which began after the drone attack, they were in other rooms and were not damaged.

“Our main museum piece was damaged. Our panorama, which was also destroyed by the fascists in 1942. It was restored. But today the copy of our Franz Roubaud panorama has again suffered from the weapons of invaders, our enemies,” museum director Mikhail Smorodkin said.

It will be possible to assess the extent of the damage, he said, after the fire in the museum is extinguished. Smorodkin assumes that the panorama has been destroyed partially or completely.

TASS has already called it a “miracle” that the original fragments survived once again. Earlier, Mikhail Razvozhayev, the governor of Sevastopol annexed by the Russian Federation, said that Roubaud’s panorama was “practically destroyed.” He accused Ukraine of a deliberate attack on the museum.
