Russia has been added to the list of countries whose citizens are granted asylum in the European Union less often. Starting June 12, their applications will be reviewed under an accelerated procedure — this could lead to a rise in rejections, human rights advocates say

Starting June 12, the EU will begin applying new rules for reviewing asylum applications. The new regulation makes accelerated review mandatory for a number of categories of applicants. One such ground is citizenship of a country for which the average rate of recognition of international protection in the EU is 20% or lower.

This means that applications from citizens of such countries may be reviewed faster, including in a border procedure, immediately after initial screening at the EU’s external border. As politician Andrei Pivovarov warns, this may affect the quality of case review, deprive applicants of the opportunity to provide additional arguments, and lead to an increase in rejections.

Russia is included in the Eurostat-published list of countries whose citizens have a first-instance international protection recognition rate of 20% or lower, with a result of 18.1%, according to the official list seen by The Insider.

💬 Human rights advocate Daria Dudley explained to The Insider that instead of revising the practice under which even applicants from countries with harsh dictatorships often receive low recognition rates, the European Union is in effect cementing this logic in its new migration legislation:

“The European Union’s new migration rules are a victory of absurdity over common sense, complete disregard for human lives and human dignity, as well as obvious contempt for its own statements about supporting Ukraine, about human rights, and the rule of law.”

If the procedure becomes accelerated, the possibility of “submitting documents later” may effectively disappear, human rights advocates explain. Therefore, even people with a strong case now especially need to seek help from human rights advocates or lawyers.
