War Through the Eyes of Meduza’s Readers. A Letter From an Anonymous Reader in Moscow

My father is a Muscovite, or rather a former Muscovite. He graduated from the Moscow Conservatory and worked in Moscow. But then, as it happened, after my mother died, while the Soviet Union still existed, he remarried and ended up in Kyiv. And I remained in Moscow. I used to go to see my father in Kyiv. Just one night on the train from Kyivsky Station. Wonderful people always ended up in the compartment, both going there and coming back.

And then suddenly we were in different countries… We started seeing each other less often, and I had my own big family. I always said: I’ll make it, I’ll definitely come see my father next year. And then suddenly the trains stopped running, the planes stopped flying. I thought the worst thing was COVID, but no.

After February 2022, I started calling my father every day, asking about him, convincing myself and him that we would definitely meet, begging him to hold on, but at the end of 2025 my father passed away. I never did get to see him.

I feel very sorry for people there and here. Ordinary people who are dying and suffering every day. And I pray every day that everyone may have peaceful skies above their heads, the kind our grandparents who lived through the Great Patriotic War used to wish for us. And we, the children back then, did not understand or value those peaceful skies, and sometimes were even annoyed by that endless, repeated wish.
