📱 Escape from the “digital GULAG”: how Russians are getting around internet blockages

Russian authorities have temporarily postponed the introduction of fees for the use of VPN traffic, but the fight to restrict the internet in the country continues. In response to ongoing shutdowns and the threat of a complete network collapse in Russia, decentralized means of digital communication are becoming increasingly popular.

For example, Meshtastic devices, which transmit messages over radio waves, look like a possible alternative to familiar messengers in the event of a complete network shutdown. And the specialized messenger DeltaChat is capable of working even under whitelist conditions.

Already now, more than 10,000 people in Moscow alone use these technologies. But for now, mainly enthusiast radio amateurs.
