Kazakhstan Demands the Return of Its Citizens Whom Russia Is Sending to War

Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry has sent a note to the Russian Foreign Ministry requesting assistance in returning Kazakh citizens who ended up in the Russian army to their homeland.

Among them is Miras Taszharganov, who came to Russia for work. According to his mother, her son was forced to sign a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry. Later, Miras told his family that he had found himself in a difficult situation and that several other Kazakh citizens were there with him.

On September 17, Kazakh diplomats contacted Miras and confirmed the information. Already on September 18, the embassy sent the Russian side an official note asking for help in bringing Kazakh citizens home.

This is yet another example of how Russia lures foreigners with promises of earnings and then uses them for its war against Ukraine.

According to our data, at least 2,420 Kazakh citizens have signed contracts with the Russian Defense Ministry. In total, more than 12,000 people from Central Asian countries have been recruited into the Russian army.

Dozens of Kazakh citizens and ethnic Kazakhs who fought as part of the Russian army are also in Ukrainian captivity. Russia is in no hurry to take back its servicemen and effectively leaves them sitting in captivity for years.

That is why it is important for Kazakhstan’s authorities to continue diplomatic pressure and remind the Kremlin: Russia is responsible for the people it recruited, sent to war, and then abandoned in captivity.

For Kazakh citizens themselves, taking part in this war may also have serious consequences after they return home. That is why the best option is not to sign a Russian military contract and not to become a participant in someone else’s war.
