Moscow State University predicted Russia’s population will fall to 135 million in 20 years. And said banning abortions will not help restore it

The head of the Department of Family Sociology and Demography at Moscow State University, Anatoly Antonov, said that Russia’s population will fall from the current 146 million people to 135 million in 2046. Verstka drew attention to his speech at the Hippocratic Medical Forum organized by Orthodox groups.

“According to Rosstat’s medium forecast, in 2046, in 20 years, we lose 8 million, there will be 138 million people. I think it will be even less, somewhere around 136-135 million. And we will have to return to this current level. So somewhere in the 2070s, 2080s, there will be a return to the current population, to 146 million, if we pursue the right policy,” Antonov said.

At the same time, Antonov noted that banning abortions, as other speakers at the forum had proposed, would not help preserve the current population size.

“Most speakers say abortions must be banned. But even if we ban abortions, we still do not reach the level of simple reproduction [maintaining the current population size over a certain period of time]!” he said.

According to Antonov, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the “military operation,” and the breakup of families, the state will not fulfill the goal declared in the presidential decree of increasing Russia’s total fertility rate to 1.6 children per woman by 2030.
