Russia threatened NATO with a nuclear strike if attempts are made to isolate Kaliningrad Region, Reuters writes, citing a letter from the Russian Foreign Ministry to the Alliance.

In the document addressed to NATO, Moscow accused the Alliance of pursuing a “dangerous and reckless course” and allowed for “strikes on decision-making centers” using “the entire arsenal of forces and means at its disposal, including nuclear weapons.”

“This is the first time since the Cold War that Russia has threatened us in this way. So the situation is serious,” a senior European defense official commented on the Russian Foreign Ministry's statement.

In response, NATO countries pointed to their status as a defensive alliance and called on Moscow to refrain from “irresponsible nuclear rhetoric.”
