I am not a citizen of Russia, but I am Russian and have lived in Russia for more than 15 years. After the war began, I could have left, like many people around me did. With my passport, you can freely emigrate to most countries in the world. I made the decision to stay. Not because I support the “old man,” not because I’m in favor of residents of a neighboring country being killed. No. I stayed because I like this country. Not the thickheaded leadership that decided to remain in power by cannibalistic means, but the country. I’ve traveled across Russia far and wide. I adore the mountains of Sochi, I like the vibe of St. Petersburg, I love bustling Moscow. The coolest thing I’ve seen in absolutely every city I’ve been to is the people.

Of course, the war brings its own adjustments. I have become much more selective in my habits. I turned down and continue to turn down all projects that may in one way or another be connected to the war.

In my understanding, if you are in Russia, that does not necessarily mean you have to be a “Z-patriot.” More than that, you can try to persuade people who have been zombified by Putin’s propaganda. Of course, you need to be more careful; prison terms have not gone anywhere. But after a simple conversation with someone you know at least somewhat well, the chance of being reported on is extremely low.

A little math: if every person who adequately understands what is happening can persuade at least one person who has been exposed to propaganda, then the number of people who adequately understand what is happening will double. And if they each persuade one more person, it will double again. Because strength is not in repressive laws, strength is in dialogue.

People, talk to each other, debate with those who call the war a special operation. It really matters.
