Thousands of Russian soldiers are dying, going missing, and ending up as prisoners right now on the Lyman front.

Since late spring 2026, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have been carrying out a successful offensive operation in the north of Donetsk region, near the city of Lyman. And while Russian television talks about “steady successes at the front,” the reality is radically different.

As a result of the Ukrainian army’s offensive, more than 176 square kilometers in Donetsk and Luhansk regions have been liberated. The settlements of Novoselovka, Oleksandrivka, Yarova, Sredne, Shandryholove, Redkodub, Nove, and Katerynivka have been returned to the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

In the Telegram group of the “I Want to Find” project, more and more messages are appearing from people searching for Russian servicemen who stopped getting in touch in the Lyman area. More than 170 such notices have already been published.

Over four months of the AFU offensive operation on the Lyman front, the “I Want to Find” project received 1,128 requests to search for missing servicemen of the Russian army there. Based on these appeals, the captivity of dozens of those reported missing has already been confirmed. In total, however, the number of missing Russian Armed Forces soldiers on this front is at least several times higher, since not everyone knows about the project or has submitted search requests.

In addition, information about new prisoners is coming in almost daily, and the project promptly informs relatives if their loved ones have ended up in captivity.

The AFU’s Lyman counteroffensive has demonstrated yet another systemic problem in the Russian army: commanders’ mass lies about the real state of affairs at the front.

It turned out that all this time, Russian commanders on the ground had been reporting imaginary victories on this front to the command in Moscow. It got to the point that Putin, in one of his speeches, announced the capture of the city of Sviatohirsk. Although in reality, that settlement is in the Ukrainian rear, about 20 kilometers from the front line.

And that might be one thing, but the commanders, trying to cover up their lies, are ruthlessly sending their subordinates into “meat” assaults, just so they can actually capture the villages they have already listed in reports as “under control.”

As a result, families across Russia are searching for thousands of their loved ones who went missing on the Lyman front.
