❗️Mathematician and blogger Mikhail Verbitsky, who was detained in Yerevan, will not be extradited to Russia. He will soon be released from the isolation ward
TV Rain was told this by Artur Sakunts, head of the Vanadzor Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly.
“Unfortunately, legal procedures still remain. They will finish them and release him. He will not be extradited to Russia,” the human rights defender noted.
Verbitsky was detained at Yerevan’s Zvartnots Airport on June 12. This happened because there is a criminal case against the scientist in Russia, and the pretrial restraint measure is arrest. After that, he was sent to an isolation ward in Yerevan.
According to the words of the scientist’s wife, Yulia Fridman, two criminal cases were opened against him in Russia, for “discrediting” the army and justifying terrorism: “For casting doubt on the methods used to investigate the terrorist attack at the Crocus concert hall recruitment center.”
🔵In Moscow, Verbitsky worked at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics, taught at the Faculty of Mathematics at HSE University, and also at the University of Glasgow and the Free University of Brussels in Belgium. He was one of the most popular bloggers in the Russian-language segment of the internet.
🔵According to the scientist, he has lived in Rio de Janeiro since 2015, where he holds a professorship at the National Institute of Mathematics.
🔵Sources cited by RIA Novosti claimed that Verbitsky became a defendant in a criminal case over calls for terrorism.
