In New York, a Russian woman accused of cooperating with the FSB was sentenced to 14 months in prison. She lived in the US and attended meetings with Russian opposition figures

OCCRP reports on the sentence handed down by the federal court for the Southern District of New York against Nomma Zarubina.

According to the prosecution, she provided the FBI with false information about her cooperation with Russia’s FSB.

Zarubina was also charged with attempted naturalization fraud for concealing information about involvement in organizing prostitution.

She pleaded guilty.

Zarubina worked for a long time with the Russian Center in New York (RCNY), which was headed by Elena Branson. In 2020, US authorities accused Branson of spreading Russian influence, conspiracy, and violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

🔵Initially, Zarubina was involved only in Branson’s case, but later she herself became a defendant. According to the prosecution, on FSB instructions she was supposed to develop a network of contacts among journalists, think tank employees, university professors, and try to shape pro-Russian views among them.

🔵In 2024, she was arrested.
