Britain has for the first time detained a tanker from Russia's "shadow fleet." It was trying to pass through the English Channel
The operation to detain the tanker Smyrtos, sailing under the Cameroonian flag, lasted six hours. Early in the morning on June 14, British military personnel boarded it.
The tanker was moved to an anchorage in the English Channel off the southern coast of England. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that "this successful operation deals another blow to Russia."
"Shadow fleet" tankers carry Russian oil in circumvention of Western sanctions. European countries have repeatedly detained such vessels, but in most cases released them after inspections.
