The swimming season has opened in Anapa. Officials insist there are no problems and everything is under control. In reality, however, the region is still living with the aftermath of the environmental disaster caused by the fuel oil spill in the Black Sea. Local residents and volunteers continue to report fuel oil and petroleum products in the water and on the sand, and the cleanup of the coastline is still not finished.

At the same time, Krasnodar Krai governor and United Russia member Veniamin Kondratyev argues that fuel oil has “always been there” and the only question is how much of it each person sees. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko claims that the sand in Anapa is “cleaner than on the French Riviera.”
