As part of negotiations on Ukraine, Russia and the United States are discussing a multibillion-dollar deal to sell Lukoil’s foreign assets — NYT

The company’s assets are currently valued at

0 billion, but the lifting of U.S. sanctions would increase their value, The New York Times notes.

The publication’s sources say Vladimir Putin personally raised the issue of selling Russian energy assets at a meeting with Trump’s envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff on September 5.

According to the newspaper, the main potential buyers include U.S. investor Todd Boehly, who donated two million dollars to Trump’s political campaigns, as well as two Middle Eastern companies that, the publication notes, may be connected to Kushner or to Witkoff’s family. At the same time, there are no signs that Trump’s negotiators would personally benefit financially.

The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation notes that this deal “will lower energy prices for ordinary Americans.”

A former U.S. Justice Department prosecutor and ethics expert called the situation “a troubling and extremely dangerous intertwining of interests.”
