Ilya Traber has been detained — a businessman close to Putin since the 1990s. He is suspected in the murder of St. Petersburg deputy Alexander Petrov

Ilya Traber has been detained in St. Petersburg. He is considered a businessman who was close to Putin back in the 1990s, when Putin worked at St. Petersburg City Hall. Traber started out trading antiques, later became involved in the management of the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal, and in addition, through his associates, controlled virtually all seaports in northwestern Russia.

Security forces have now come with searches to his mansion in the Leningrad region and to his office on Starorusskaya Street in the city center. According to Fontanka and RBC, Traber’s detention is connected to the 2020 murder case of businessman and municipal deputy Alexander Petrov. Petrov’s son, Vitaly Petrov — Russia’s first Formula 1 driver — said he does not yet know anything about the investigation.
