How Russian Officials and Military Personnel Pocketed Money Raised for Beslan Families
How Russian officials and military personnel pocketed money raised for Beslan families
This refers to funds raised during the SOStradanie charity concert, which Mikhail Kozyrev organized in 2004.
After the tragedy in Beslan, Mikhail Kozyrev suggested that NTV hold a charity telethon similar to the one broadcast on American television after September 11.
Only three days were spent preparing the event, and in that short time dozens of stars agreed to take part: Yuri Shevchuk, Boris Grebenshchikov, Leonid Agutin, Andrei Makarevich, Mumiy Troll, the bands Bravo, Lyube, Chaif, and many others. That is how the SOStradanie marathon came about.
Kozyrev insisted that there should be no politicians on air. But on the morning of the marathon, it emerged that Gromov, Luzhkov, Gryzlov, and others were already on the guest list. He then issued an ultimatum: if politicians were on air, there would be no artists. In the end, the politicians were not allowed on air, and that was a victory.
The marathon stayed on air until deep into the night. The fundraising reports listed the figure of 2.5 million rubles. However, it was not possible to monitor how the collected money was distributed.
In the program “Mishanina,” Mikhail Kozyrev speaks in detail about organizing the SOStradanie marathon and recalls the very moment when he realized that most of the funds would not reach the Beslan families.
