A serviceman who surrendered to Ukrainian captivity and then returned to Russia in a prisoner exchange will be tried for treason and desertion

The case against 34-year-old Ruslan Chapparov was sent to the Southern District Military Court in September, writes Mediazona.

It is not known what investigators considered to be treason.

According to the “I Want to Find” project, Chapparov was taken prisoner in February 2025, and in late June he was returned to Russia in an exchange “in the category of severely wounded and seriously ill.”

He had been convicted multiple times — for attempted theft, collecting and storing wild cannabis, and robbery. In 2021, in Novosibirsk Region, he was sentenced to seven years in a special-regime penal colony for a group knife robbery. Judging by the circumstances, he went to war while he was a prisoner.
