King Charles spoke in the U.S. Congress. He opened with an Oscar Wilde line: “The British and Americans have much in common, except for language.”
The chamber greeted all of Charles's remarks with delight, applause, and standing in a sign of respect.
The king's speech really was exemplary in the royal manner. He called for joining together to defend Ukraine and the bravest people.
“After the events of September 11, 2001, when NATO invoked Article 5 for the first time, and the UN Security Council stood as one in the face of terror, we responded to that challenge together. Shoulder to shoulder, we went through 2 world wars, the Cold War, Afghanistan, and other episodes that defined our common security. Today, decisive action is needed to protect Ukraine and the bravest people,” Charles III said in his address to the U.S. Congress.
