“We were used as bait”

Mompoloki Odirile Martin is an architect from Botswana. Mompoloki was looking for work online and clicked on an ad that redirected him to WhatsApp with a job offer in Poland.

The agent promised a one-time payment of 20,000 euros, a free flight, housing, as well as medical insurance and school for his children. The ad said nothing about taking part in military action. After flying to Russia, Mompoloki ultimately ended up as an assault soldier in the notorious 15th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade, military unit 90600.

There were other foreigners in the unit besides him, but all of them were used the same way. They had to work as “can openers” — move first toward Ukrainian positions so that the commander, using a drone, could spot the firing positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine when they began firing at the mercenaries.

Those who refused to go were simply zeroed out, something Mompoloki himself witnessed.
