A Kazakh citizen was detained in Berlin on suspicion of spying for Russia

In Berlin a Kazakh citizen was detained on suspicion of spying for Russia. He collected data on German industry and on targets for sabotage

In a press release from Germany’s Federal Prosecutor General, the detainee is identified as Sergey K. (his full name is not given). According to Deutsche Welle, he is 47 years old.

According to the prosecution, since May 2025 Sergey K. had been collecting and passing various information to his handler in one of the Russian intelligence services.

Among other things, the detainee gathered data on the military aid Germany is providing to Ukraine, as well as on Germany’s defense and military industry.

In particular, the suspect photographed and sent his handler pictures of public buildings in Berlin or military convoys on the autobahns, including a convoy from one of the NATO states. In addition, he reported on sites in Germany that he believed were suitable for sabotage. According to the investigation, Sergey K. told his contact person that he was “ready for anything.”
