Meduza has published a major investigation into how Russia and Ukraine fight “internal enemies” during the war. It shows that the FSB and the SBU use similar methods

In this text, we use a new term, “prisoners of war”: by this we mean all Russian and Ukrainian civilians who have ended up in prison as a result of Russia’s attack on Ukraine in 2022. In Russia, these are mainly Ukrainians seized under occupation and people who spoke out against the war; in Ukraine, collaborators, real and imagined.

Journalist Shura Burtin studied hundreds of verdicts, read all available reports by human rights defenders, and investigations by colleagues. And he came to the conclusion that, despite the deep differences between Ukraine and Russia, during the war their security services act almost identically: they fabricate evidence and stage provocations against their own citizens.
