According to Rospotrebnadzor chief Anna Popova, specialists are “doing everything so that no risks arise for local residents,” and the situation is under “close control.”

Another fire broke out on the night of April 28 after drone debris fell on an oil refinery. A state of emergency has been declared in the Tuapse district, and 60 people were evacuated from nearby homes.

At the same time, Rospotrebnadzor’s own measurements had previously recorded concentrations of hazardous substances above the maximum permitted levels. According to the agency’s April 21 data, the levels of benzene, xylene, and soot in the air exceeded the norm by two to three times. Local residents have been reporting an “oil rain” for several days already.

Environmentalists warn that combustion products pose a serious threat to health. In a conversation with The Insider, Vladimir Slivyak, co-chair of Ecodefense!, noted that such fires produce toxic and carcinogenic substances, and that benzene belongs to the highest hazard class and can cause cancer.
