Kaliningrad Region is the only region of the Russian Federation surrounded by NATO countries. Ukrainian drones do not fly there, and marketplace warehouses do not burn. Just a few years ago, Kaliningrad residents traveled to Lithuania to shop and walked the streets of Polish Gdansk, feeling like “Russian-speaking Europeans.” Now, for most citizens, the nearby border with the European Union is closed. Store prices are rising. Young men are signing contracts and leaving to fight in Ukraine.

Journalist Mira Braunits spent a week and a half in Kaliningrad Region to understand how residents of Russia’s “calmest” federal subject perceive the war, which is being felt more and more sharply in the region.
