Russia's Foreign Ministry is "working" to bring back from Azerbaijan 11 Russian citizens who were given actual prison terms
This was stated to Vedomosti by the ministry's official representative, Maria Zakharova.
She claims that the Foreign Ministry is handling this "together with the competent authorities"; in addition, Russia's embassy in Baku is in contact with the compatriots and their relatives. Negotiations on this are also underway with the Azerbaijani side.
"It was emphasized that the swift release of our fellow citizens would be an important step toward full normalization and moving bilateral relations forward," Zakharova noted.
The Foreign Ministry's official representative expressed hope that the Russians would be able to return to Russia "soon."
🔵The Russians were detained in Baku on July 1, 2025, amid deteriorating relations between Russia and Azerbaijan after a raid by Russian security forces on representatives of the Azerbaijani diaspora in Yekaterinburg. Two people were killed as a result.
In 2026, they were sentenced to actual prison terms.
