“The war has already entered Central Asia through our citizens. The question is whether the region will recognize this as its own problem before the consequences finally come back home”
Despite all the resonance in the media and society, Russia still continues to massively involve citizens of Central Asian states in the war against Ukraine. Residents of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan sign contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense and have been dying in someone else’s war for years already. This issue давно moved beyond isolated cases and has become a real problem for a not-so-small region.
After a number of distant “exotic” countries got seriously tough on Russian recruiters and achieved a partial or complete halt to the recruitment of their citizens into Russia’s “SMO,” the Kremlin has had to compensate for the “shortfall” with residents of the near abroad. Independent journalist from Kyrgyzstan Adil Turdukulov, in a piece on exclusive.kz, explains very clearly how Russia manages to recruit citizens of Central Asian states so easily, and why the threat is far more serious than it seems.
