Pete Hegseth apparently gave the go-ahead to allocate $400 million to Ukraine under the USAI program after Senator Mitch McConnell on Tuesday, in his column for The Washington Post, sharply criticized the Pentagon for the fact that the funds appropriated by Congress in December, which Trump signed off on, still remained uncontracted.

Yesterday at a hearing, Pentagon comptroller Jules Hurst said that the distribution of funds would depend on "what equipment the Ukrainians want to purchase," Bloomberg reports.

Well, God willing, they get contracted. Obviously, $400 million is a very small sum, but if it is distributed, that will mean Congress still retains at least some influence over the Trump administration.

Some media outlets wrote that these funds had been "unfrozen," but that terminology is not entirely accurate. In fact, nobody froze them; they were simply sitting in the budget and for several months were never allocated.

⬆️And one more thing. Remember this kind man. This is Mitch McConnell, he is 84, and in November he is leaving, this is his final term. (He has been a senator since 1985, 41 straight years).

Old Mitch has done a lot for Ukraine over these years. In particular, in 2024, when the Repubs under pressure from Trump blocked $61 billion for Ukraine for half a year, Mitch was one of those who most actively pushed for it to be unblocked.
