Russia has fallen even lower in the press freedom ranking. Behind it are Iran, China, and North Korea

In the annual press freedom ranking published by the international organization Reporters Without Borders, for the first time more than half of the world’s countries (52.2%) are classified as countries with a “difficult” or “very difficult” situation. In 2002, in the very first Reporters Without Borders ranking, such countries accounted for 13.7%.

In the 2026 ranking, Russia fell by one place, from 171st to 172nd, and was described as a “specialist in using laws on combating terrorism, separatism, and extremism to restrict press freedom.”
