Medinsky Complained About “Königsberg Motifs” in Kaliningrad Region

Putin aide Vladimir Medinsky called for “paying attention” to “German elements” in the symbolism and public space of Kaliningrad Region.

Speaking at the Baltic Cultural Forum, he said that German names appear on the websites of regional government bodies and state institutions, that “Königsberg motifs” are encountered in everyday life, and that “the coats of arms of Baltiysk and Chernyakhovsk are, generally speaking, a complete reincarnation of German coats of arms.”

Medinsky wondered why a cognac is called “Old Königsberg” and marzipan is called “Königsberg.”

In his view, “the time has come for all of us to pay attention to these issues,” because “the word is material.”
