U.S. immigration police detain a lama from Buryatia who spoke out against the war with Ukraine and sought political asylum

In Wyoming, agents of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained the Buryat lama Baldan Bazarov, the Movement for the Independence of Buryat-Mongolia said on its Instagram page.

Baldan Bazarov is the former abbot of the Kyren datsan in Buryatia’s Tunkinsky district. After the Russian army’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, Bazarov openly spoke out against the war.

He left for the United States, where he applied for political asylum. In the U.S., Bazarov worked as a hotel cleaner, in a laundry, and in a delivery service; over the last year he lived in California and worked as a driver, People of Baikal write.

The details of his detention in Wyoming are unknown; Bazarov may face deportation, the outlet notes.
