The Polish president stripped Zelensky of the country’s highest award because he gave one Ukrainian army unit the name “Heroes of the UPA”

“For the overwhelming majority of Polish society, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army remains, above all, a formation responsible for brutal crimes committed against Polish citizens during World War II. At least 100,000 Polish citizens were killed by the UPA… solely because they were Poles, Jews, or representatives of other minorities. Therefore, giving one of the Ukrainian military units a name referring to criminals from the UPA has significance that goes far beyond Ukraine’s internal affairs,” the president’s statement says.

He noted that stripping Volodymyr Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle does not change Poland’s policy of supporting Ukraine in the war with Russia and is not directed against the Ukrainian people.

After that, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha refused the Polish Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.
