The modern Russian army is so full of killers and sadists that, to be physically or morally crippled, you do not necessarily have to end up in an assault unit and be sent to the combat zone. In any unit, even one in the rear, an ordinary person faces mortal danger. Especially if you are somehow different from the majority.

Twenty-four-year-old former Russian serviceman Artem Bykov is a member of the LGBT community. Life was not easy for him “as a civilian,” and in the army he had to endure abuse in full and see others being abused as well. The young man ended up in a “model” unit (Putin himself once visited it!) located at the Mulino training ground in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, where he encountered cave-like brutality and sexualized violence by the command against personnel.
