How the “Baymak case” changed the lives of Bashkir families. This is the subject of a new joint piece) by OVD-Info and Glasnaya

The Baymak protests became some of the most prominent in Russia in recent years. In January 2024, thousands of residents of Bashkortostan came to the small town of Baymak. Their goal was to support local activist Fail Alsynov, who was being tried under an article on inciting hatred.

They were met outside the court by the National Guard and riot police: flash-bang grenades and tear gas were fired into the crowd, and protesters were pushed back with batons. That same day, the authorities opened criminal cases over mass riots and attacks on police officers. In total, 81 people were detained, including four women.

More than two years later, the “Baymak case” remains something that forever changed the lives of dozens of families, leaving women without fathers and husbands, sons and brothers. How do these people live today? This is the subject of a new piece we are publishing in partnership with @glasnaya\media.
