Legal ways of making money did not much appeal to 19-year-old Russian Yuriy Kaleev, so he went into distributing synthetic substances, planning soon to open his own shop and thereby “scale up” the business. Having ended up “in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he was caught by the police and was preparing to receive 15 to 20 years in prison.

Yuriy considered a contract the only way to “weasel out,” but it turned out there was practically no time for that: on his third day in the unit, he was safely sent on a foot march from Bakhmut to Kostiantynivka, where he was captured by Ukrainian soldiers.
