Alexey Nuriev and Roman Nasryev played together in a rock band. Then they were each given 19 years in a penal colony for an arson attack in protest against the war

Alexey and Roman are friends from Chelyabinsk and members of the rock band "Room 32." Alexey was its leader and vocalist, while Roman played musical instruments.

▶️ Alexey Nuriev

Alexey Nuriev is a firefighter and musician. He is 40 years old; he has a wife, a minor daughter, and an adult stepson whom he raised from childhood. Alexey worked for the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and by the time of his arrest he was the commander of a unit at a fire and rescue station. He wrote poetry, developed the rock band, and practiced kettlebell lifting.

▶️ Roman Nasryev

Roman Nasryev is a musician and a driver for the private security service. He is 31 years old and has a wife and two children. Roman learned to play the guitar, jew's harp, harmonica, dombra, and flute; he was into running, skiing, and fishing; repaired cars; and also wrote poetry.

▶️ Criminal prosecution

On the night of October 11, 2022, Alexey and Roman set fire to the administration building in Bakal (Chelyabinsk region), where the military registration office was located. The linoleum and an information stand burned out in the building, and the fire was extinguished before firefighters arrived.

That same day they were detained and charged with property damage. Later, the charge was reclassified as committing a terrorist act, and then another case was opened against them, for undergoing training for terrorist activity.

Neither admitted guilt for terrorism and said that this was how they wanted to express their disagreement with the war and mobilization.

On April 10, 2023, the court sentenced them to 19 years in a maximum-security penal colony.
