The biggest robbery in Russian history took place in St. Petersburg: bank employees stole gold worth 2 billion rubles.
The Kuibyshevsky District Court placed bank manager Irina Poryvayeva, who is suspected of stealing 2 billion rubles, under house arrest. Her boss is also involved in the case.
Investigators believe that office head Andreyeva, with the participation of Irina Poryvayeva and other unidentified people, stole gold investment coins bearing St. George the Victorious from the vault. In total, they managed to steal 8,893 coins. Their denominations varied, and the total value amounted to 2,022,290,095 rubles.
The stolen gold weighed more than 160 kilograms. The bankers pulled all this off right under the noses of their other colleagues.
