The worst transfer of last season in world football, which became known only now.

In 2025, 19-year-old Cameroonian Mewungu Mbe Stevis Astrid, together with a friend and his brother, received an offer from a supposed representative of the Russian football club “Ural” to go for a trial in the Russian Federation. The footballers signed some documents in Russian and within a week were already in Moscow. But instead of a football academy, they ended up at a military enlistment office. A man named Alexander, who met them in Russia, explained that the person from Cameroon had lied to them:

“He said: you signed a ‘one-year contract.’ But it is not that contract, the football one, at all — it is a military contract. He also said that where they would be sent, there were no problems with salary: ‘Serve there, there is nothing terrible, and afterward you will come back and play football’

As a result, all three predictably ended up as assault troops, and only Stevis was able to return from the war: his brother allegedly was captured (we have no confirmation of this), his friend was killed during an assault, and Stevis himself was lightly wounded three times. In the end, he never made it to the FC “Ural” academy, and almost ended up in labor slavery(!) in Yekaterinburg, but “kind people were found” who sheltered him in a children’s leisure center.

It would seem to be an ordinary, unfortunately, story about Russians recruiting Africans into the war by deception. All would be nothing, but Russian media themselves reported this! Yes, yes, Russian propaganda openly acknowledged the recruitment of foreigners into the occupation army by fraudulent means! It did this with particular cynicism — everything is presented as if the bloodiest war since World War II were a fun adventure for simple-minded Africans, and a contract with the Russian army were the best thing that could have happened in their lives.

“Stevis remembers his fellow servicemen and commander very warmly. He says that both the commander and his comrades-in-arms treated him well and helped him. It helped that there were fighters who spoke English well. The commander taught him Russian, and he himself learned the Russian anthem”, — never mind that these people nearly deprived you of your life and sent your brother and friend to their deaths, but they taught you Russian and the anthem!

The Cameroonians are not the first foreigners who went to the Russian Federation to do sports and ended up at war (let us recall the story of Kenyan track-and-field athlete Kibet Evans). They are clearly not the last either. It would be very good if specialized media picked up this story, so that foreign athletes stop going to Russia “for work,” and the cannibalistic nature of Russians becomes visible to everyone. Including to those who believe that “sport is outside politics” and advocate the return of Putin’s athletes to the world stage.
